Reactions To Roosevelt's Creed
Many considered Theodore Roosevelt's "Confession of Faith" as Socialist propaganda and asserted that the government was not responsible for health insurance.
“For the first time in our history a non-socialist party in our country now also appropriates some of our Socialist demands. And Mr. Roosevelt has gone a long way in the direction of State Socialism. He favors old-age pensions for workingmen, the care of workingmen’s families in case of sickness, National and State laws in favor of compensation in case of accidents. |
“In one generation these ideas have grown from the platform of a secret revolutionary organization into the “Confession of Faith” of a candidate for President of the United States. If by any cataclysm of popular feeling that candidate should again become President, what is to prevent this State Socialism from incorporation in the Constitution?” |
